MIRARCO Mining Innovation has announced the appointment of Dr. John Henning as director of the Geomechanics Research Centre (GRC). Henning replaces Sean Maloney.

“Laurentian University is delighted with the appointment of Dr. Henning,” said Vic Pakalnis, president and CEO, MIRARCO Mining Innovation. “His considerable experience in the mining industry will help MIRARCO further strengthen the reputation of the Geomechanics Research Center that was developed under the guidance of Dr. Peter Kaiser and Sean Maloney.”

Henning is a geotechnical engineer with over 30 years of operational and applied geomechanics expertise in both underground and surface mining operations throughout Canada and internationally. He has extensive experience in managing geotechnical risk across conditions ranging from very competent and stressed rock, through to very low quality yielding rock masses. Most recently, he served as a key member of a corporate technical team, using expertise in geotechnical engineering, mining and geology to provide technical leadership to the global operations and management teams of a large multi-national mining company.

Henning has Bachelor degrees in Geotechnical Engineering (University of Toronto) and Geology (McMaster University), along with M.Eng and PhD degrees in Mining Rock Mechanics from McGill University.
