Laurentian University in Sudbury and Northeastern University in Shenyang, China, entered into an agreement in December to establish the China-Canada Centre for Deep Mining Innovation.

The purpose of the centre is to carry out “leading global research…in deep mining and to stimulate innovation and co-operation between industry and academic institutions in China and Canada.”

Research will focus on rock mechanics, geology and safety.

A delegation from Northeastern University was in Sudbury in early December to sign the agreement, and two weeks later, a delegation from Sudbury, including Ross Sherlock, director of the Metal Earth research project, Caleb Leduc of CROSH, Dr. Ming Cai of Laurentian University and Vic Pakalnis, president of MIRARCO-Mining Innovation, travelled to Shenyang for a two-day networking event.
