Deep mining network issues call for proposals

The Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI) has issued a call for proposals for its Ultra-Deep Mining Network’s (UDMN) Think Deep Program.

The Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI) has issued a call for proposals for its Ultra-Deep Mining Network’s (UDMN) Think Deep Program.

Armed with $15 million in funding from the Government of Canada and promises of a further $31 million from the mining industry, the UDMN aims to solve the challenges that impact resource extraction at depths greater than 2.5 kilometres.

The program aims to support solution-providers capable of creating the industry-needed tools and technologies that will help ultra-deep mines operate more safely, generate more value, improve the human environment and enhance productivity.

The goal is to help the mining industry accelerate research and development, and to deploy proven innovative technologies.

Successful applicants will have a project that is industry-supported and addresses a specific industry challenge.

"We are excited to grow our portfolio of projects under the Think Deep Program and welcome new network members,” said Bora Ugurgel, UDMN's managing director. "This program provides us with an opportunity to connect with new partners across Canada that can provide innovative solutions to solve ultra-deep mining challenges."

The UDMN and its Think Deep Program are guided by four strategic themes:
rock stress risk reduction, energy reduction and optimization, material transport and productivity, and improved human health.
