Mining students at Sudbury’s three postsecondary institutes will benefit from $21,000 in scholarship money, thanks to the fundraising efforts of industry stakeholders.
The money was raised at Sudbury Saturday Night, an annual evening of music, food and revelry that takes place during the conference of the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) in Toronto.
This year’s event, held on March 4, featured a 1980s theme, with music from the era, and a porketta bingo — a traditional Sudbury activity that involves the auctioning off of seasoned meat.
Sponsors included Aurelius Minerals Inc., Canaccord Genuity Group Inc., Dundee Corporation, Emerita Resources Corp., Magna Mining Inc., Maritime Resources Corp., and Troilus Gold Corp. Technica Mining, a Sudbury-based mining construction firm, topped up the amount raised to bring it to $21,000.
All three schools offer various programs in the area of mining engineering, while Cambrian and Collège Boréal also offer courses in battery electric vehicle maintenance for mining vehicles.
