As many as 400 delegates are expected to attend the Maintenance Engineering and Reliability/Mine Operators (MeMO) Conference October 16 to 18 at the Radisson Hotel in Sudbury.
The conference gets started on October 16th with a networking event and official opening ceremony. It continues the following morning with a panel of industry executives addressing the challenge of “Leading and Managing in a Volatile Economy,” said Joanne Boucher, conference co-chair and BESTECH general manager, Sudbury.
Confirmed panelists include Michael Winship, MeMO 2016 honourary chair and president of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (CIM); Stuart Harshaw, vice-president, Ontario Operations, Vale; Peter Xavier, vice-president, Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations, Glencore; and Adrian McFadden, former vice-president, underground mining, KGHM International and now with Hatch.
The technical program on October 17 and 18 will feature up to 80 presentations, according to conference co-chair and BESTEH director of strategic innovations Trang Tran-Valade.
Topics will focus on increasing productivity and reducing costs, health, safety and the environment, risk management, asset management and reliability, strategic planning and innovations in mining processes.
A conference banquet will be held Monday night, October 17th and on Tuesday night there will be a diversity and inclusion panel hosted by the Sudbury CIM branch at Science North.
MeMO 2016 will also feature a trade show with 40 exhibitors, a half-day workshop October 16 on mental health and wellbeing in the workplace, and a full-day, post-conference workshop October 19 on “The importance of lubrication in asset reliability.”
Delegates can sign up for post-conference tours of Glencore’s Nickel Rim South Mine and the Wahnapitae First Nation Centre of Excellence, Vale’s Totten Mine, and the world famous SNOLAB, the site of Nobel Prize-winning particle physics experiments two kilometres underground at Creighton Mine. Also scheduled is a Vale Biodiversity Tour which will showcase the mining company’s environmental initiatives, including its Clean AER project, slag regreening, underground and surface greenhouses and raising of fish and bees.
On the Thursday and Friday preceding the conference, elementary and high school students from the region will be able to learn about the mining industry at a Mining for Society event which will take place at Laurentian University.
MeMO 2016 is organized by the Surface Mining Society, the Underground Mining Society and the Maintenance, Engineering and Reliability Society of the CIM, along with members of the CIM Sudbury branch.
