Collège Boréal's new Trades and Applied Technology Institute opened its doors Sept. 5th.
The state-of-the-art, 20,000 square foot facility in Sudbury will house the college's two-year Heavy Equipment Mechanics and Welding and Fabrication programs, and will be used for a variety of continuing education short courses, including forklift and scissor lift operation, wheel installation, and rigging.
Mining companies and other employers in the region will also be able to use the facility for their own specific training requirements.
"It's going to have a huge impact in the community, especially in view of the current shortage of professional trades people," said Daniel Giroux, dean of trades and technology. "It will make a big difference being able to train people on state-of-the-art equipment."
Funding for the $3.7 million building was provided by the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation, Fednor and Union Gas. Another $500,000 was spent to equip the facility.
