Crusher manufacturer seeks partner to boost business in the Americas

A large Chinese manufacturer of crushers and assorted mineral processing equipment has selected Sudbury as a sales and service base for the Americas.

Sanland Crushing and Grinding Equipment Manufacture Company, based in Shenyang, China, 690 kilometres northeast of Beijing, is licensed to manufacture Nordberg Symons cone and impact crushers, and also manufactures jaw and gyratory crushers, bar and ball mills, grizzly feeders, vibratory screens and conveyor systems.

Kevin Ma, president of Canadian subsidiary, Sanland Canada, moved to Sudbury with his family in August and has been overseeing the installation and commissioning of the company’s first sale in the Canadian market - a ball mill at Kirkland Lake Gold.

Sanland Canada hopes to establish a joint venture with an existing mining supplier in the Sudbury area that is able to provide sales and warehousing support for North and South America.

The Sudbury connection was made through two local businessmen, Denis Portelance and Gord Hope, who have been brokering business between Sanland and Central and South American mining operations for several years. Both have visited Sanland’s manufacturing operations in Shenyang a number of times and now serve as directors of the Sudbury-based Canadian subsidiary.

Business development consultant Bob Bateman has been assisting Ma with the legal and financial details of establishing the Canadian operation and introducing him to potential joint venture partners in the Sudbury mining cluster.

Sanland China exports crushers and other mineral processing equipment to some 60 countries around the world, including North Korea, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia and New Zealand, but has had very few sales in North and South America until now.

The company operates out of a large ISO9001:2000-certified manufacturing plant in Shenyang that is fully equipped with state-of-the-art machinery, including a 6.3-metre vertical lathe, an 8-metre hobbing machine, a 200-metre floor-type boring machine and an 80-tonne overhead crane.

Expansion to Canada required a relationship with people who knew the market, said Ma.

“Both Gord and Denis had been to China five or six times and have become good friends. They know Sanland very well and I know them very well.”

Just as Portelance and Hope have facilitated Sanland’s entry into Canada, Ma hopes to help Sudbury area mining suppliers who want to do business in the often challenging Chinese market.
