Century Systems Technologies, a Sudbury-based a supplier of sophisticated geological data management and governance systems to the global mining industry, has been acquired by CAE Inc.

The acquisition builds on CAE’s expanding presence in the mining industry following its purchase of the Datamine Group in April 2010 and leverages CAE’s 60 years of experience in modelling, simulation and training.

“We are committed to delivering the best and most complete solutions to enhance operational efficiency and reduce risk of mining operations, and the acquisition of Century Systems will help complete our offering,” said Nick Beaton, president of CAE Mining. “We welcome the Century team, and look forward to providing our new customers with continuous service support. The Century Systems software technology is a perfect fit for CAE Mining’s approach to data management, governance and quality control requirements in the mining industry.

“Datamine recognized the strength of this offering some time ago and have been a reseller of the Century Systems products for several years. This acquisition allows us to incorporate the technology fully into our core solutions and leverage our global distribution, support capability and research and development to take the Century products to their full potential in the market.”

Century Systems’ central data management solutions, along with its suite of integrated software applications, streamline exploration and mine operation processes for more than 80 companies in over 150 sites in 43 countries around the world. All solutions are designed to enable customers to adhere to best practices and guidelines established for mineral resource evaluation by national and international regulatory bodies.

Century Systems is based in Sudbury and employs 20 people. Its suite of software solutions includes DH Logger, a drillhole data capture and management application, as well as Sample Station, MineMapper 3D, Century LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) and Fusion, a database solution allowing mining companies to store exploration data in a central repository.

“The integration of Century Systems’ business into CAE Mining is an exciting evolution for us and for our clients,” said Century Systems president Ray Auger. “I am looking forward to being part of the management team that works on these exciting opportunities. CAE’s R&D programs will ensure the sustainability and growth of Century Systems technology and products for existing and future customers alike.”

CAE Mining develops and provides innovative technology and services to plan, manage and optimize mining operations. With the acquisition of Datamine and Century Systems, CAE Mining has operations in nine countries, and offers an extensive suite of planning and optimization mining software for exploration data management, geological modeling, mine planning and operations management. The acquisition will enable CAE Mining to introduce simulation-based mine planning, scheduling and training to an industry for which safety is paramount and training costs are high.

CAE is a world leader in providing simulation and modelling technologies and integrated training solutions for the civil aviation industry and defence forces around the globe. The company has annual revenues exceeding C$1.5 billion, and employs more than 7,500 people at more than 100 sites and training locations in more than 20 countries. CAE’s installed base of civil and military full-flight simulators, training devices and global network of 30 civil aviation and military training centres, trains more than 75,000 crew members yearly.

The company’s entry into the mining industry is in keeping with plans announced in April 2009 to spend C$274 million over seven years to expand beyond the aerospace industry. CAE’s diversification targeting the mining, health care and heavy equipment industries was facilitated by a $100 million research and development contribution from the Quebec government.
