CEMI stages communication workshop during PDAC

The Centre for Excellence in Mining and Innovation (CEMI) will hold a workshop on communications during the PDAC to share ideas and technology solutions for the increasingly data-centric underground environment.

The Centre for Excellence in Mining and Innovation (CEMI) will hold a workshop on communications during the PDAC to share ideas and technology solutions for the increasingly data-centric underground environment.

The event will take place on Wednesday, March 6th at the Pantages Hotel Toronto Centre, 200 Victoria St., from 11 am to 1:30 pm.

The session will be the third in a series of workshops designed to identify underground communication challenges and potential technology solutions. The first event in the series brought together mining company representatives from Sudbury and Timmins for an industry brainstorming session.

The second workshop was held during the Wavefront M2M (Machine to Machine) Summit in Vancouver in February.

The objective is to help mining companies enhance their communication and IT capabilities and arm suppliers with the solutions required to address mining company needs.

Communication backbones have historically been used primarily for voice communication in underground mines, but “now, we have sophisticated technology collecting production and maintenance data, so we’re seeing more and more data collected,” said Bora Ugurgel, co-ordinator of CEMI’s Innovation and Prosperity Office.

“Given the challenges, we see a need for software and applications that can manage the data and make sure it’s utilized.”

Mining suppliers interested in participating in the March 6th workshop can register by emailing Bora Ugurgel at [email protected] before February 26.

Participation is free of charge.
