Bluhm Burton Engineering’s (BBE) Sudbury office has announced the hiring of Tim Paquin, a mine ventilation professional with 30 years of experience in potash, precious metal and base metal mining operations. Prior to joining BBE, Paquin served as a senior mine ventilation technologist with Hatch.

BBE, a South African-based consulting group specializing in mine ventilation, refrigeration, cooling, energy and health and safety, opened its Sudbury office earlier this year and hired Dr. Stephen Hardcastle as managing director.

Hardcastle, who has a Bachelor’s degree in mining engineering and a PhD in mine environmental research from the University of Nottingham, formerly served as senior research scientist with CANMET Mining, a division of Natural Resources Canada.

BBE’s South African office also announced the hiring of Dio DeCastilo, a refrigeration expert formerly with Hatch.

BBE’s work in Sudbury is focused on cooling requirements and ventilation upgrades for mines planning to go deeper.

The recent hirings are indicative of a slight improvement in the market, said Hardcastle.

“It’s still a little soft here in Canada, but we’re starting to see increased activity worldwide. The industry appears to be coming out of a downturn and companies are beginning to address their needs.”
