Aboriginal student wins scholarship

Samantha Lickers was the recipient of the Taking Flight Scholarship, awarded to her at the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy's Maintenance Engineering and Mine Operator's conference in Sudbury October 25th.

Samantha Lickers was the recipient of the Taking Flight Scholarship, awarded to her at the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy's Maintenance Engineering and Mine Operator's conference in Sudbury October 25th. She is a first-year civil engineering student at Laurentian University and a graduate of the two-year Mine Engineering Technician program at Cambrian College.

The scholarship recognizes Aboriginal high school and post-secondary students who wish to pursue a career in mining. It awards $1,000 prizes to four exceptional students from across Canada annually. The scholarship was created with start-up funding from DeBeers Canada and Diavik Diamond Mines Inc.
