Worker dies after underground accident at Matachewan mine

Alamos Gold says it's working with local authorities and will be doing an internal investigation

Young-Davidson Mine, operated by Alamos Gold, is located about 60 kilometres west of Kirkland Lake near the town of Matachewan.

A worker at a Matachewan-area mine died underground on Tuesday.

Alamos Gold has reported that an employee died after an underground accident at its Young-Davidson Mine, located about 60 kilometres west of Kirkland Lake, on the afternoon of Nov. 29. 

“We are shocked and deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague. Nothing is more important than the safety of our employees. On behalf of the entire team at Alamos, we extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and loved ones,” said John A. McCluskey, president and CEO, in a news release.

The name of the victim has not been released yet.

In the announcement, Alamos Gold said it's working with local authorities and will be doing an internal investigation.

"All means of support are being provided to the family and those impacted by the accident," reads the news release.
