National group recognizes Northern mining leaders

Northern Ontario recipients were among the award winners being recognized by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) last week.

In conjunction with its annual convention, the CIM hosted its 2022 awards gala in Vancouver, B.C., on May 2.

Each year, the event celebrates the achievements of the industry's most promising professionals and future leaders. This marks the first time in two years the event has been held in person, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Northern Ontario winners include:

  • Phillip A. Cancilla, a partner with Kirkland Lake equipment manufacturer Heath & Sherwood, who has earned a CIM Fellowship;
  • Nickel Rim South Mine, owned and operated by Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations, a Glencore Company, in Sudbury, which won a John T. Ryan Safety Award;
  • Shawn Rideout of Sudbury, the chief mine rescue officer for Ontario Mine Rescue, who received a Mining Safety Leadership Medal; and 
  • Stephanie Bleker of Sudbury, mine manager at Vale's Totten Mine, who received a Mining Safety Leadership Medal.

The Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum is the leading not-for-profit technical society of professionals in the Canadian minerals, metals, materials and energy industries. The organization has been operational since 1898 and has more than 10,000 members.
