Sudbury mining centre partnering with Finnish research institute

MIRARCO signs memorandum of understanding with VTT

Sudbury mining research centre MIRARCO has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Finnish research institute VTT, to partner on developing sustainable technologies for the mining industry.

The MOU was signed on March 6 during the 2023 conference of the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) in Toronto.

In a brief online statement, MIRARCO said the nature of the joint initiative would involve developing “sustainable technologies for tailings and water management.”

Considered one of Europe’s leading research institutions, VTT is a state-owned institute advancing research and commercialization in the areas of carbon neutral solutions, sustainable products and materials, and digital technologies.

MIRARCO — the Mining Innovation Rehabilitation and Applied Research Corporation — is based in Sudbury on the campus of Laurentian University.

Its research centres on four main areas of interest: mine waste biotechnology, geomechanics research, decision support software, and sustainable energy solutions.
