NOBA is an initiative designed to celebrate the achievements of successful entrepreneurs and businesses. It is organized by Sudbury Mining Solutions Journal’s parent company, Northern Ontario Business.
The event rotates annually among five major centres in Northern Ontario.
Sudbury-based FNX Mining was named Company of the Year (51+ Employees) for rising from a small junior mining company to an ever-expanding producer capable of challenging historical players like CVRD Inco and Xstrata Nickel.
Another Sudbury company, Rezplast Manufacturing Ltd., won the Innovation Award. It has made its mark throughout the global mining sector with its environmentally friendly, low-maintenance portable Mining Toilet and Power Climate safety shower.
United Supply Inc., based in Timmins, won the Judges’ Choice Award. The company has 100 employees and plans to expand its current location from 26,000 to 76,000 square feet.
The United Supply group includes United Industrial, which focuses on mining, construction and forestry supplies, Swish Maintenance, which provides janitorial supplies, as well as The Bucket Shop, which has an inventory of teeth, edges and buckets for heavy equipment.
Steeltech, also a division of United Supply, provides field crews, welders and pipe specialists to the mining and forest industries. United Equipment Rentals specializes in heavy equipment rentals, and United Lubricants is a distributor of Esso products.
Sudbury dentist Dr. David Morris was awarded the Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for his diamond drilling business, Morris Group of Companies. He runs the diamond drilling operation while still maintaining two successful dental practices.
