Discover Abitibi proposes new studies

A follow-up to the $10-million Discover Abitibi geoscience study may be in the offing.

A follow-up to the $10-million Discover Abitibi geoscience study may be in the offing. A technical committee is evaluating proposals for a series of additional studies and will formally request funding from the provincial and federal governments by the end of October, said project manager Robert Calhoun.

Companies responding to an impact study measuring the spin-off related to the first phase of Discover Abitibi reported exploration spending of $15 - $16 million and plans for an additional $19 million. Launched in 2002 as a community-based initiative to fuel mineral exploration in the Timmins-Kirkland Lake region, Discover Abitibi carried out 19 geoscience projects, ranging from high resolution geophysical surveys to ground mapping and seismic profiling.
