Representatives from the City of Sudbury, Cambrian College and three Sudbury-area mining supply companies are attending the Electra Mining Africa 2006 show in Johannesburg, South Africa, Sept. 11 - 15.
Electra Mining, held every two years, is expected to attract approximately 600 exhibitors and between 25,000 and 30,000 visitors.
Cambrian College President Sylvia Barnard will be following up on a memorandum of understanding signed in March to assist with the development of a mining program at the University of Limpopo in Polokwane, the capital of Limpopo province.
South African mining companies are required to offer employees skill training under the country's Black Empowerment legislation, but there is a shortage of skilled training facilities and curriculum, said Jock Forbes of the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines.
The three mining supply companies attending Electra Mining are RDH Mining Equipment, Hard-Line Solutions and Mansour Mining.
RDH, a mining equipment manufacturer, recently sold a newly designed Drillmaster 100 DH long hole drill to a mine in Zambia, and will be looking to
generate more business in Africa.
Hard-Line Solutions supplies remote control and mine-wide communication systems, while Mansour Mining and affiliated companies specialize in ground support and mine hardware, fabrication, contract mining, rubber products, pumps, and conveyors.
MNDM and City of Sudbury staff will be promoting exploration and business opportunities to South African mining companies and suppliers interested in diversification.
