The increased enrolment in its trades and applied technology programs is attributable in part to the college’s ongoing efforts to promote trades-related careers to high school students.
In March, College Boréal, Cambrian College and Laurentian University teamed up with Stantec Inc. to sponsor a Mining Day for 150 post-secondary students in trades and mining programs.
Speakers provided students with an overview of the rewarding career opportunities that await them as a result of the increase in demand for minerals and the current shortage of miners, tradesmen, geologists and engineers.
The 23 per cent increase in applications at Boréal proves that “the efforts of the college and industry to promote our programs is working,” said Brian Vaillancourt, College Boréal dean of trades and applied technology.
While the language of instruction at Boréal is French, the college ensures that students are equipped to work in English as well.
“We’re getting our students workforce ready, so we make sure they are fully bilingual with respect to mining terminology,” said Vaillancourt.
