Laurentian University mining engineering students won the 19th annual Canadian Mining Games at the University of Toronto February 19 – 21. The Laurentian victory is its seventh since the founding of the annual event in 1991.
The University of British Columbia finished second and the University of Alberta came in third. Also competing in the Games were Dalhousie University, Université Laval, École Polytechnique, McGill University, Queen’s University, the University of Toronto and the University of Saskatchewan.
The Canadian Mining Games is an annual competition between students from major Mining Engineering programs across Canada. Students compete in more than 20 academic and hands-on events. The Laurentian University mining engineering team won by a wide margin, placing in the top three positions in nine of the 21 events, including mine design, mine rescue, ventilation, stock market challenge, AutoCAD, jackleg drilling, materials handling and mineral identification.
Gold and silver sponsors of the Laurentian team were Vale Inco, Suncor Energy, Teck Cominco, the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, Laurentian University, SGA and Atlas Copco. Bronze sponsors included Orica Mining Services, Professional Engineers of Ontario, SCR Mines Technology Inc., Golder Associates, Penguin ASI, MIRARCO, Battlefield Cat and Kiewit.
Next year’s Games will be hosted by Dalhousie University in Halifax.
