A leading manufacturer of heavy mining equipment made a significant in-kind donation to the Cambrian College Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) Lab last week.
The donation was a battery electric LHD scooptram by Sandvik, a global leader in mining and industrial equipment. The donation included a battery pack assembly and charger along with four battery modules to support training, said a news release from the college.
The donation was made during the BEV In Depth conference that was held at the college to showcase the battery electric vehicle industry for both automotive and mining purposes.
Sandvik also contributed to the new Sandvik Innovation Room at the battery electric vehicle lab, currently under construction at the college's Glencore Centre for Innovation.
The BEV lab is a 5,000-square-foot facility that will house cutting-edge equipment to generate critical data on the performance characteristics of mining-related BEV equipment, said the college.
The college celebrated with a ribbon cutting for the official opening of the Sandvik Innovation Room, which is a part of the lab facility.
College president Kristine Morrissey said she was pleased and grateful for the support from Sandvik. She said it would help maintain Cambrian's position as a leader in mining education and research. Sandvik sales vice president for Canada Peter Corcoran said his company was pleased to contribute to the college, especially with green technology.
"Canada's mining economy continues to thrive and it is our joint mission to develop skilled talent," he added.
