CEMI announces short course on structural geology guidelines
The Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation will hold a two-day short course entitled, Structural Geology Guidelines for Use in Burst-Prone Underground Mines October 15 and 16 at the Willet Green Miller Centre in Sudbury, and October 18 and 19 in Toronto.
The course will be comprised of technical presentations and hands-on sessions focused on providing attendees with an awareness of: the risks posed in burst-prone mines; the structural geology and other geotechnical aspects to pay attention to and measure in drill core and in drift mapping; and the tools to use to optimize design and response effectiveness during project/mine design, development and operation.
Specific sessions will include:
·An overview of the mine system, rock mass behaviour, and the coupled structural geology rock mechanics approach
·A detailed review of the importance of relevant structural geology parameters at the regional and local scale and the case for careful observation and analysis
·A discussion, with examples provided, of drill hole and drift mapping structural and other geotechnical data collection techniques and tools used, including data analysis
·A practical consideration of the importance of stress and geologic structure interactions in burst-prone underground mines, and
·Consideration of how to practically integrate stress and structural geology as well as other geotechnical measurements when evaluating the implications for mine design and stope sequencing.
The sessions will be supplemented with practical hands-on opportunities to learn about and use appropriate techniques and tools.
Course Instructors will include Trevor Carter of Golder Associates, Wayne Barnett and James Siddorn of SRK Consulting, Rob Bewick of CEMI’s Rio Tinto Centre for Underground Mine Construction and Benoit Valley of CEMI and MIRARCO’s Geomechanics Research Centre.
Registered participants will receive a hard copy of the Structural Geology Guidelines for Aiding Characterization of Deep Mining Fault Behaviour Manual prepared in partnership with CEMI, Golder Associates and Queen’s University.
Deadline to register is September 28, 2012.
